Broadcasters Face Charges
Those responsible for Wednesday evening’s radio broadcast by Radio Pegasus Enterprises—or for any in! the future—would be prosecuted if sufficient evidence could be found, the Regional Engineer for the Post Office in Christchurch (Mr H. W. Wilkinson) said on Thursday. The station broadcast the first of two test programmes' from a mobile unit the day! its application for a private radio warrant was dismissed by the New Zealand Broadcasting Authority. “Little can be said at this stage except that members of my staff are investigating reports of the broadcast,” Mr Wilkinson said. He would not say what form the investigations would take. “Fairly strong proof would be needed before charges of {illegal broadcasting could be! i brought under the Post Office • I Act, 1959, or the Radio Regu-; | lations, 1953,” he said, i “This would have to be supplied by either catching those responsible in the act, or by uncovering evidence that undeniably pointed to the person, or persons, involved. “In a case such as this hearsay evidence would not be of much use,” said Mr Wilkinson.
