Clean Air
Sir, —A correct comparison ] of average London and Christ- ' church smoke pollution per f cubic metre would be based on figures for every suburb and the centre in. each case. As London has a far greater * proportion of hill suburbs j and th? centre, the City, no I night pollution (except pert haps Dean Sullivan of St Paul’s). Fig. 2 issued by the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority is too far- . fetched. Suburban London 1 now extends to the North 1 Downs of Surrey and all its s high areas naturally reduce * the average of low-lying smoke ; in comparison with Christ- ‘ church’s average. Mr Neary f does not state the s*-e of the ‘
affected radius from the centre. Cashmere, Mount Pleasant, St Andrews Hill, Clifton, Scarborough and Upper Riccarton must figure in a ! correct Christchurch average. —Yours, etc., A. B. CEDARIAN. ’ February 27. 1970.
