A. and P. Assn Makes Profit Of $2264

The Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association showed a surplus of $2261 last year, compared with a loss in the previous year of $2988.

The association’s annual report says that the show produced a larger profit—the gate on the Friday was the best since the 1966 Royal show —as did the motor camp, and revenue from storage and letj ting the grounds was higher. I General expenditure and : the expenses of maintaining the show grounds had also in-i creased. The higher subscription had; produced an additional $3729 and accounted for 15 per cent of the total revenue. The report says that the centennial appeal had been an unqualified success. To December last year cash received was $155,205, which represented 97.12 per cent of promises, which totalled $159,794 from 2495 donors. According to the Australian consultants this was an outstanding result. Grandstand Lost It had been unfortunate that the long delay imposed by the building controller had

resulted in costs rising to the extent that the association had not been able to complete the original grandstand plan. The report records that three more houses in Whiteleigh Avenue adjacent to the -show grounds, were bought during the year. In a reference to-the last [Show, the report says that j with the encouragement to the Education Board arrangements had been made for some parties of standard 4 children to be given a conducted tour of the show. This tour, which was in the hands of two refined agricultural instructors of the board, had been such a great success that it would become a regular part of the school cirriculum.

“From the association’s point of view, the tours will in time no doubt build up a. significant number of members of the public who understand what shows try to achieve, are sympathetic to shows, and find an interest in coming to shows,” says the repftrt. The report also notes that the space taken up by trade displays, at last year’s .show was biggei;.than ever, occupying nearly seven acres.
