Helped Beat All Blacks

A man who helped inflict one of the most crushing defeats on an All Black test team was in Christchurch yesterday in the course of a New Zealand visit. He is the Governor of Western Australia (Sir Douglas Kendrew), who, as D. A. Kendrew, front row forward, played for England on the day it beat New Zealand, 13-0, at Twickenham in 1936. As a strapping 19-year-old, Sir Douglas toured New Zealand with the 1930 British team, but he did not play against Canterbury, or in any of the four tests. After showing good form towards the end of the tour, he was chosen to play in the fourth test, but was injured at training a day or two before. Sir Douglas had 10 matches on the tour and was capped 10 times for England, between 1930 and 1936.
