The Nigerian Head of State (Major-General Yakubu Gowon) alleged in Lagos today that some Roman Catholic priests in Europe and America had been collecting funds for the reconstruction of the former secessionist territory of Biafra. In a good will message to the annual conference of Roman Catholic bishops which opened today, General Gowan said: “1 would like to remind you that you all have a duty to combat the evil machinations of the enemies of this nation. The Church must, in' addition to its ecclesiastical duties, show a keen interest in the nation. “Reports reaching us indicate that, even after the cessation of war, certain Roman Catholic priests in Europe and America still continue to engage in acts against Nigeria, such as organising collection of funds for the reconstruction of a Biafra which does not exist.
”1 believe you all realise the damage being done by hostile acts of this nature, to the image of the Roman Catholic Church in general, and to the future of the religion in Nigeria in particular.”
