RECKINGEN (Switzerland), February 25. Alpine rescue teams have searched throughout the night for 27 people missing in avalanches in Switzerland and France which are known to have killed at least 20 people.
In the tiny village of ReckIngen, in the Swiss Alps, rescue teams bold little hope for 17 people still unaccounted for after the huge snow slide, at dawn yesterday, that engulfed seven houses and a military barracks.
Forty-eight people are known to have been trapped; 18 have been found alive, but injured, and one has died in hospital. Twelve bodies have been recovered so far. About 100 miles to the south-east, troops, firemen and
volunteers in the French ski resort of Lansleviliard reported early today that they had so far dug UP seven bodies after an avalanche which crashed on a hotel late yesterday. Five injured people were also found by the rescue teams, officials say that possibly another 10 people are still missing. The area is 30 miles from Vai d'tsere, where 42 people died a fortnight ago in France's worst avalanche disaster.
