N.Z. Seamen’s Conditions

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Feb. 24. Conditions of employment and wages for seamen were negotiated entirely between employers and the Seamen’s Union, the president of the union (Mr W. Martin) said yesterday. He was commenting on a statement by Mr C. S. Harnett, secretary of the Marine and Power Engineers’ Institute, that the Governmentcontrolled roster system used for employing seamen in Australia could go a long way toward curing the malaise of the New Zealand shipping industry. “Mr Harnett shall have nothing to do with our conditions of employment and wages,” declared Mr Martin.
