Beetle Pest Suggestion

(N.Z Press Assn --Copyright) SUVA. Feb. 9. A suggestion that nuclear energy could be used to wipe out the rhinocerous beetle pest in Fiji copra plantations has been made by a visiting American nuclear physicist. Dr Donald Koch said that he was appalled- at the damage done by the beetle, which he thought could be eradicated by the exposure of beetle grubs to nuclear radiation. Nuclear energy was being used successfully in other parts of the world to control pests, including the tsetse fly. through a system known as the nuclear sterile male tech , nique. There would be no danger to humans or animals, said I Dr Koch, who is the principal; nuclear consultant to a Wash ; ington atomic energy organ-[ isation. and is on his way to' Western Australia to establish a consulting office.
