Christchurch Visit By Ghanaian Diplomat

The Deputy SecretaryGenera! of the Commonwealth Secretariat, Mr A. I L. Adu, of Ghana, will spend two days in Christchurch next week during a short visit to New Zealand as a guest of the Government On the evening of Friday, 'February 20, Mr Adu will be welcomed to Christchurch at a reception organised by the Royal Overseas League, which has its New Zealand headquarters in Christchurch. The next day he will be the guest of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Professor N. C. Phillips) and in the afternoon he will visit a sheep farm near Christchurch. On Sunday morning he will visit ■ Lincoln College with the prinicipal (Dr M. M. Burns), before flying to Sydney later in the day. The Prime Minister (Mr ■Holyoake) recently announced that Mr Adu would arrive in New Zealand on February 15. “Since its formation in 1966 the secretariat has made a real contribution to the development and effectiveness of Commonwealth cooperation which today covers a wide range of activities,” said Mr Holyoake. “Mr Adu’s | visit will provide a very welicome opportunity to discuss ! matters affecting that unique 'association of countries to (Which we belong.” I

Mr Adu is responsible for the administration of the Commonwealth Secretariat and is in charge of its international affairs division. Born in Ghana (then known as the Gold Coast) in 1914, Mr Adu was educated there and at Queen’s College, Cambridge, where he graduated M.A., and at the Imperial Defence College, London. From 1939 until 1965 he was successively in Ghana administrative and governmental service associated with higher education, externa: affairs, Cabinet secretariat and African and United Nations organisations. He has held his present post since the establishment of the Commonwealth Secretariat in 1966.
