Stable, Luck Changed
Cyclone, a failure in several starts from P. H. Jones's Wanganui stable earlier in the season, marked his first public appearance from D. J. Thistoll’s Riccarton stable with an easy win in the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Bealey Stakes yesterday. One of the few of the stock of Cyrus racing, Mr D. J. Stuart’s five-year-old was much too good for the others at the end of a mile. He came fast from just forward of the middle of the field to lead into the last furlong. It was as good as over then. Dowling dropped his hands on him short of the post, so the runner-up. ‘Witchcraft, was flattered by the winning margin of three lengths and a half.
Irish Hope was half a neck back third after appearing to have his chance. Navigate appeared to be unlucky not to reach for one of the places. R. J. Skelton was disappointed for a run on the Washdyke five-year-old in the straight, and the combination had to settle for sixth.
