Auckland Gardeners’ Hoses Out Again

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, February 8.

Auckland home gardeners went on a hosing celebration over the week-end and pushed water consumption to a non-working day record 56.3 m gallons.

A hosing ban applied last week by the Auckland Regional Authority was lifted over the week-end, and yesterday consumption exceeded the amount of water supplied to inner-city reservoirs by about 5m gallons. Lower consumption today saw levels rising in the major city reservoirs. Hosing restrictions would remain in force this week, according to the chief engineer for-the bulk water supply department of the area, Mr A. C. B. Smithson. Meanwhile, Auckland had its first rain for two weeks this morning. A total of 0.14 in was recorded by 9 o’clock tonight, although other areas around the city were said to have received heavier falls. A weather office spokesman said the rain resulted from a cold southerly airstream

which spread over most of the country late yesterday. It brought isolated thunderstorms and hail in some South Auckland districts.
