Strong Bracket In Cup

Soldato and Promise will form a short-priced bracket in the Marlborough Cup at Waterlea tomorrow. Both won on the first day of the Nelson meeting last Saturday and Soldato started again on Monday to win decisively over two miles.

Both horses are proven stayers, with Soldato perhaps having more brilliance than Promise. Soldato will this week be driven by J. W- Smolenski, who trained him earlier in his career. Gemini Rose from Kumara added to her fine record in a brief race career when she beat all but Light Globe at Nelson last Monday. There is no reason to doubt her ability to maSter two miles and she

might test the bracketed pair. Dryden Frances, a newcomer to the circuit. King Dillon and Light Globe are others capable of racing prominently. Eight of the 13 acceptors in the second leg, the Waterlea Stakes, will race earlier 1 in the day. Valencia, Miss Minx and Rostrevor look to be i three of the better prospects 1 but form shown in the earlier race might be the best guide, i Jondor and True Forbes ■ are two smart pacers in form . and they should race boldly i in the divisions of the Hillers- 1 den Handicap. The on-course concession ‘ double will be on the Otaki Handicap and the Starborough Handicap, Bedevilled ■ and Rebel Cord forming a likely combination. Races three, four, five, ; eight and nine are the events of the jackpot, which will | start with a pool of $lBB5. Fair weather is forecast and the track will be fast ON-COURSE DOUBLE ' Noon.—
