SATURDAY SPORTS

Sports audiences in radio and television probably rank among the most critical of them all, but there must be a general regard for the radio’s "Sports Roundup” service. Now something similar is to be attempted on television. On February 28, there will be a national link to cover the New Zealand athletic championships in Auckland, a cycling meeting in Wellington, and the national rowing championships at Lake Waihola, Dunedin. There may also be telecasts of a race meeting. Or two. The operations supervisor for Northern television, Mr J. H. Metcalf, has said that the programme might well be the forerunner of a regular Saturday afternoon sports coverage. Nothing similar will be screened until April 4, and that is only a tentative programme. Everything, Mr Metcalf said, depends on the availability of equipment and staff.
