I Corporal F. R. Martin, a ] chef at the Royal New Zealand Air Force base at Wig- | ram. said yesterday that his ' selection as a cook at New Zealand’s Expo 70 pavilion at 'Osaka, came as a surprise. “After all, I didn't apply for the job," he said. i Corporal Martin said he had i no idea how the selection was made, but he assumed it was made by “higher authorities” checking the files of such cooks as were proficient for the seven-raonth task. He did not expect to know until he arrives at Osaka later this month what his duties would be.
Corporal Martin, Glasgow born, has been with the Royal New Zealand Air Force for 12 years. Before he joined he trained as a cook in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve and later with the Royal Air Force. Last year, while based at Singapore with No. 41 Squadron, Corporal Martin was one of three non-commissioned officers in charge of the Changi Creek Hotel’s in-flight catering establishment While he is in Japan his salary, and that of two other service cooks, will be paid by their respective' services and the Meat Board will provide accommodation. In addition the three men will receive location allowances.
