The Consumer’s Sovereignty

i Sir, —Is it not about time that someone thought about the consumer? Yesterday we had comment from the plumbers that the labour only contracts were not good for business probably because they are undercutting established rates for jobs. As I understand the plumber must be registered no matter what the conditions of the contract are, hence the consumer will not be getting an inferior job. Today we see a comment from the tobacconists which infers that it is to benefit the consumer that price cutting should not be permitted. Could either of these organisations explain what advantages the consumer obtains from paying a higher price for goods and services?— Yours, etc., D. R. AYLWARD. February 4, 1970.
