Reported Theft Of Cattle

Sir,—Thank you for printing my letter of December 22, on reported cattle thefts but I would ask: Is it sufficient to have informed only the complainant? Initially 69 cattle were claimed to have been stolen, a considerable number. A few days later 12 were accounted for. But 57 cattle are still “missing.” If, as Mr Gordon states, the inquiries are complete, why have no prosecutions been forthcoming? Why has only the complainant been notified? Your article, far from libellous, did reflect upon the district and if in fact there was no foundation to the accusation then surely it should be repudiated. The facts of this; inquiry should surely be; printed.—Yours, etc.. A. C. EARL. ( DuvaUchelle, January 20, 1970. [Detective Superintendent; F. A. Gordon replies as follows to this letter: “It is not customary to inform other than the complainant of the result of police inquiries and I am therefore unable to comment further on Mr Earle’s queries.”]
