TAXIS TO HAVE HIRING LIGHTS
A Christchurch taxi company will put amber lights on its cabs so that people can see at a glance whether the cab is hired.
Seven vehicles in the company’s fleet of 76 have already been fitted with the lights, which go off when the meter is turned on, and the rest will have them fitted as soon as possible. The small amber lights will be fitted on either side or below the taxi sign on the roof of the vehicle. Permission for this has been given by the Commissioner of Transport. “Christchurch people seem to be shy of hailing cabs in the street, as is commonly done overseas, and it is hoped the move will encourage them,” Mr J. R. Parrott, the president of the Gold Band Taxi Society, said last evening. “The system will only work at night, of course. “This is not being done anywhere else in New Zealand as far as I know,” he said. “A system of lights in the grille was tried on Wellington taxis but this was against Ministry of Transport regulations."
