BIBLE LESSONS

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Feb. 4. A new concept in religious instruction in State primary schools, aimed at relating Christian principles more directly to everyday life, is being introduced this year. Instead of the traditional system of teaching children a set number of Bible stories, the new method will emphasise the lessons of the Bible and their relevance today. The new syllabus is the

work of the Council for Christian Education, made up of representatives of the nine major Protestant denominations. Its function is to provide visiting teachers and material for the 30 minutes of religious instruction a week permitted by law in State schools. The new syllabus will be introduced in classes from standard 3 to form II this year. Work on the standards 1 and 2 section of the syllabus is continuing and it is expected to be ready for use next year.
