CONFIDENCE IN CANTERBURY

“The opening of our new store is an indication of our outlook and confidence in the progress of Canterbury,” says the manager of Butterfields, Ltd, in Christchurch (Mr F. Strachan). “Careful study of overseas trends has enabled us to provide what will be the most modern furniture store in Christchurch,” he adds. Mr Strachan says there has been an explosion of interest in New Zealand in providing for the home, luxury in furniture. furnishings and carpets. "This new store is well equipped to display to the' best advantage the latest designs in an amosphere capable of providing the best selection at the most economical price.”

He points out that from small beginnings, Butterfields have branched out into a wide range of goods, although furniture is still the main line. One of the best equipped furniture factories in New Zealand still manufactures craftman-made furniture for its stores. The Simplex pram factory, owned by the company, supplied high grade prams and manufactured a wide variety of dolls’ prams, baskets, bassinets and similar lines, Mr Strachan said. This, and the extensive operations of the company's wholesale organisation in importing and distributing to branch stores, particularly of Manchester goods, indicated the steady and progressive policy of the company. “In these days of rapid change in every field, it is refreshing to find some ele-

ments of our society, some of our traditions and some of our businessess that have stood the test of time and still retain business principles and policies that are much as they were over a century ago,” he says. “Certainly Butterfields, Ltd, has grown in the years between, but the name is unaltered, the original class of merchandise furniture—’is I still sold, plus a multitude of other products, and the urge to progress is with us still. “I am extremely proud,” Mr Strachan says, “to be associated with this store which is the equal of any I have had the privilege to visit overseas in recent years. “I take this opportunity of extending a welcome to members of the public and assuring those who visit us of a courteous and friendly service.”
