Excavations At Kowai River

Sir,—With my family, I recently walked the old coach road which leaves the Main West Road where a small stream joins the Kowai River and rejoins it at a point just below Porters Pass. We were surprised and a little disturbed to find that this peaceful and historic walk had been freshly excavated. Heavy rain has converted much of the newly-exposed surface into a torrent bed while for up to 30 yards above the

| track throughout its entire length the top soil has I started to slip away. A great deal of native plant life has been destroyed, and already that vigorous, intruder, Californian thistle, has begun to encroach. It would be interesting to know the reason for thia work being undertaken, as the track is too steep and narrow to serve any useful purpose, and it is quite evident that the resulting erosion will permanently scar this valley.—Yours, etc., W. R. SCHOFIELD. January 1, 1970.
