Pigeons As Pests

Sir,—The executive of the North Canterbury Federated Farmers consider “uncontrolled” pigeons a pest. So do owners of racing pigeons. Has the main controlling body of pigeon racing in New Zealand, the New Zealand Homing Pigeon Federation, ever been consulted? Surely an “open season” could be declared throughout New Zealand during the winter months when no races are held and an intensive destruction programme carried out instead of trigger happy individuals, mainly at week-ends, taking pot shots at anything that flies. It is obvious by the tone of the recent meeting the executive is aware of the protection of homing pigeons under the Wildlife Act.— Yours, etc., A. B. THOMAS. January 29, 1970.
