Independence Of Fiji Discussed
(N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) LONDON, January 27. The possibility of Fijian independence within the next 12 months is being freely discused in diplomatic circles in London. Speculation arose after the request by both political parties in Fiji for discussions with Britain aimed at the granting of "Dominion” status by the British Government. The request itself is reported to have caused some puzzlement in Whitehall as there is now no provision for a former colony—as Fiji is now—to become a dominion. "It must be either a colony or independent.” a Whitehall source said today. It is expected that this point will be made to Fijians during the talks now being held in Suva between Fijian politicians and a British delegation led by Lord Shepherd, Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The question of whether the Fijians will then press for independence is thought to depend on the extent to which the Fijian population is prepared to share power with the Indian section of the population. Talk of “independence” for Tonga is also heard in London and there is wide specu-
laticn that the tiny island kingdom will take it about June of this year. Tonga has a “treaty of friendship” with Britain. It is understood tjiat the formality of Tonga taking independence would be carried out simply by the island King exchanging formal letters with Buckingham Palace.
