Fewer Southdowns Sold, But Price Average Rises

Although there were more Southdown rams than last year in the Canterbury stud ram fair which began at the Addington Show Grounds yesterday, the fewer rams sold brought an average about a third higher than was realised last year.

Other mutton-breed rams met a rather ; indifferent sale, only a limited number being I sold., Dorset Downs, which were offered in ' larger numbers this year, did not sell so 1 strongly as last year and the average price fell about 30 per cent. '

The procession of passings gave a rather depressing note to the day’s selling. Whereas last year 68 Southdowns were sold under the hammer out of a catalogued offering of 114, yesterday only 56 sales were made at auction when 123 rams entered the ring from the official entry of 130. As is almost invariably the case, buyers were selective and on this occasion confined their interest to the offerings of only about 10 breeders, other vendors’ sheep being largely neglected. Though the average price for Southdowns, at $4OO, was almost exactly 33 1-3 per cent higher than last year, even the leading breeders had varying fortunes, some not doing as well as last year. Higher Price The sale of Southdowns i opened auspiciously, last year's top price or 11000 being well ex- ' ceeded by a sheep from A. D Wyllie and Sons, of Omihi, 1

which looked like being i knocked down at 11300 but went ; on to $1450 under keen competition before it was sold to C. McCaskey and Son, of Wai- • para. The. Wyllies had a good day, another sale being made to the North Island for $1350, and for eight rams ranging from $250 they average $087.50, compared ■ with almost $O2l last year for ■ six. The price level reached in the opening sale was not equalled during the day, but the $lOOO mark was also reached or exceeded by J. C. Medlicott and Son, of Wafmate, who sold a ram to the North Island for , $l3OO, and by T. E. M. Brooks, of Brookside, also with two sales to the north at $l2OO and $lOOO. In the first run of the sale 30 rams were sold out of 69 i offered for an average of a shade better than $447, and tn , the second run 26 were sold out of 54 for an average of . $345. A quarter of those sold ' brought $5OO or better. The best of the rams realised i from about $lOOO to $1450, with ■ good bringing from 6500 to $9OO i and others ranging down to i about $lOO. The top average of the day < went to T. E. M. Brooks, who 1

showed a spectacular improvement on his last year’s performance. With prices ranging from $4OO to $l2OO he averaged $775 for four, whereas last year for two sold at auction he had a modest average of $212.50. For two bringing from $350 to $9OO P. J. Butcher, of Mosgiel, averaged $625, and the Medlicotts, who topped the market and recorded the best average last year of $625 for six, yesterday had seven sales between $l5O and $l3OO and averaged a fraction over $507. J. D. and W. T. Robertson and Company, of Gore, were among those who improved on last year’s performance. With six rams bringing from $2OO to $9OO they averaged almost $467. compared with $225 for two at the last fair. On the other hand J. A. Brown, of Oamaru. lost ground with four selling from $250 to 6550 and averaging 6344, whereas last year he had an average of more than 645$ for six. D. C. McMillan (Lochaber, Irwell) was also back on last year’s fair with six selling from 6175 to 6400 at an average of $254 compared with almost $351 for seven last year. With three making from $2OO to $350 M. A. Robins (Maheno) averaged $250 and D. H. Robertson and Sons (Waikoikoi, Gore), were also behind their trading last year with four making from $l5O to $2OO and averaging $187.50, when last year for a similar number they averaged almost $244. Vendors from all parts of the east coast of the South Island were represented in the offer-

ing and there was a similar spread of buying, with useful support from North Island interests who took at least nine of the Southdowns. Many Passings The day’s selling began with the South Suffolks and it was only after. seven of these had been offered and then passed that a sale was made. In fact only one out of the offering of nine of this breed found a buyer in the selling .ring. It was from F. J. Amos, of Ashburton, and went to South Canterbury for $250. For two Ryelands and one Suffolk there was also no sale at auction.

Three of the seven Hampshire Downs brought into the ring found buyers at auction at prices ranging from $175 to $375 and at an average of $292. Last year a single sale was made at $3OO. I. A. Roy and Company, Ltd, of Clinton, made the sale at $375 and another of their rams was sold afterwards at $5OO.

The Dorset Downs did not have as strong a sale as last year. The entry was up from 19 to 30 but only 14 were sold at auction, which was the same number as last year, but whereas last year the average was almost $331 yesterday the average was lower by $99 or about 30 per cent. Prices ranged from about $l4O to $4OO, with the top money going twice to the Darenal estate, of Waipara, who also had a ram passed in at $5OO. A feature of the stud ewe sale was the animated demand for Hampshires and Dorset Downs. An offering of 25 one-shear Hampshire ewes from R. J. Knowles and Son, of Palmerston, brought the fair to life, and there was a buzz of excitement from the public gallery, as prices, after opening in the $l4O or $l5O range, continued to climb to $3OO and more. The average for the Palmerston consignment was $205. It was an exceptional sale, and indicative of the marked rise In popularity being experienced by this heavy Down breed. $360 For Iwe The top price was s3Bo—for the last ewe offered—and there was another sale at $320. The former price is believed to be a record for a ewe at thia fair. Dorset Downs sold consistently well, only three ewes being passed out of an offering of 50. Darenal Estate was the principal vendor, 23 of its 25 one-shear ewes selling for an average of $ll4. Prices ranged from $BO to $l3O.

A. J. R. Johnstone (Cust) sold four one-shear ewes at $6O to $l3O. for an average of $110: S. R. Inwood fCoutts Island) sold eight at $9O to $l5O, for an average of $121.25: and H. N. Munro (Omihi) sold five at $l2O to $l6O for an average of $134. W. M. Early, of Montalto, was the principal vendor in the South Suffolk ewe section. His offering of 41 one and two-shear ?wes sold from $32.50 to $55 for in average of $44.30, and 28 one, two and three-shear ewes *rom J. L. and L. G. Smellie Leithfleld). sold from $3O to 155 for an average of $44.30. There was a sizeable offering »f Southdowns from four weeders, and all were sold at ■ uction, although at lower Igures than the heavy Down weeds. D. C. McMillan (Irwelb ’old 25 for an average of $25. its prices ranging from $23 to‘ *2B: J. H. Paterson (Amberley).• ; old 91 one-shear ewes at $9 to •22.50 for an average of $13.30: T .1.
