Seamen Reject Roster Scheme
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 29. The Wainui dispute is still not resolved. Seamen at stop-work meetings around the country have rejected a proposed temporary roster system which would have been used until details were worked out for an engagement system similar to that used in Australia.
Shipowners and Seamen's: Union officials earlier had agreed to the temporary sys-l tern. Shipowners and union officials met last Thursday and Friday to discuss the roster system and other items relat-
ing to a new award. It was hoped that the Wainui dispute might be settled in the discussions. The matter was put to the seamen on Tuesday and is believed to have been rejected at Auckland, Lyttelton and Dunedin, but accepted at Wellington and Tauranga. The secretary of the Seamen's Union (Mr L. A. Barber) was net available for comment today. A spokesman for the Union Steam Ship Company said that he did not know what the next move would be.
