D. Neate Excels At Surf Championships

(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. D. Neate (Taylor’s Mistake) with a win in the iron man championship and a second in the senior beltman’s final, had a remarkable run of success in the second Canterbury championship surf life-saving carnival, held at Karoro Beach, Greymouth, on Saturday and yesterday.

The iron man event, the most taxing surfing contest, was the first on the programme and Neate showed excellent judgment in the difficult conditions. The board race was drawn first and Neate finished first just ahead of G. Teear (Sumner). Teear caught him in the swim race at the turn round by judging the drift better but at the shore break he lost his advantage. Neate had his ski on the water’s edge but Teear had to run up the beach and drag his craft to the water. Neate hung on to win by more than half a minute. Later in the programme Neate was second to B. Mu st chin (New Brighton) in the heat of the beltman’s title and the placings were the same in the final. South Brighton suffered from the loss of B. Ward, J. Moses and R. Wilson in the six-man rescue and resusciation championship, and Taylor’s Mistake, with only 4.80 points deducted, was placed first. South Brighton was second after having 9.5 points deducted. Good Judgment G. Le Cren was alloted the patient’s place in the six-man event for Taylor’s Mistake and he was easily first to the buoy. A. Bodgcr was the only beltman in the four teams to judge the drift successfully. . The craft competitors found the conditions difficult, particularly on Sunday afternoon when the shore break knocked canoes, skis and boards over unexpectedly. But outside the breakers there was no difficulty for the boat crews and New Brighton, with powerful rowing, won its events easily

The carnival, which attracted 12 Canterbury teams in addition to the host club, was held to coincide with the opening of the Kotuku Club’s new rooms on Karoro Beach. The building was opened by the member of Parliament for Westland (Mr P. Blanchfield) on Saturday afternoon.
