SHOT PUT RECORD
Only two months a senior, H. J. Ruffell (Technical) gained the Farmers’ “Athlete of the Week” award with a shot heave which broke the Canterbury record, at a twilight meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday.
The 19-year-old, 6ft 2in, 17stone Ruffell put the 161 b shot to 51ft 2Jin to break the six-year record of the New Zealand representative and former Technical athlete, R. Tait. Ruffell’s previous best with the senior shot was 51ft in the national senior championships last season while he was still a junior.
It was the second time this season that Ruffell has been named the “Athlete of the Week.’’ In December he claimed the honour with a distance of 49ft siin. Ruffell’s best effort in training has been 49ft Ilin. Hammer Record Ruffell gained his latest award in a close decision from another Technical athlete, W. Nicholl, who was the other competitor to set a Canterbury senior record. Nicholl threw the hammer beyond the old record on five of his six attempts. His best distance of 184 ft Bin beat the old record, which he set at the first meeting of the season, by 6ft. His figures were 180 ft lOih, 184 ft Sin, 175 ft lin, 184 ft 7in, 183 ft 3in, and 183 ft 3in.
Standard Reached The women’s national javelin throw record holder. Miss S. A. Flynn (Technical), was another to excel, but this time with the discus. Although still short of the qualifying standard for the Commonwealth Games with the javelin. Miss Flynn became the second Canterbury girl to beat
the standard set for the discus. With a winning throw of 162 ft 2in, Miss Flynn beat the games standard of 160 ft. Miss Flynn had a second-best throw of 159 ft. Miss D. Charteris was relegated to second place this time, but she has beaten the qualifying standard several times earlier this season.
