Butterfly Record To Miss C. Whiting

Miss C. Whiting took advantage of the new scheme for the Canterbury swimming championship preliminaries by breaking her own national junior short-course record for 100 metres butterfly in the heats at the Woolston Park pool on Saturday. z Miss Whiting was denied the opportunity to claim another national record in the 220 yards freestyle when several withdrawals reduced two heats to a final which will be held in the Centennial Pool in two weeks.

In the last three years the championships have been held in heats and finals at the Centennial Pool, but this year the cfentre has split the heats from the finals and all heats, except the long-distance races, are being held in club pools at Woolston Park and Sockburn Park. Miss Whiting’s time for the butterfly, imin 12.2 sec, took O.Ssec off her national junior record which she set in 1968. But she has a faster time for long course (50 metres) with a time of Imin lO.Osec.

The 200 metres freestyle short course record is 2min 22sec, a time which Miss Whiting has broken by 2.4 sec in a long course pool. Earlier in the preliminaries Miss Whiting swam the 100 metres freestyle in Imin 4.ssec, I. outside the national junior record held by Miss H. Coombridge (Waikato). Because the events were held in a short course pool, no Canterbury records could be claimed, for the centre recognises only long course times during the summer season. But two swimmers in the under-14 boys’ 200 metre freestyle broke the equivalent time in their heat. B. Lewis (Spreydon) in the first heat recorded 2min 22.1 sec, which converts exactly to the Canterbury record held by J. Newton (Greymouth) of 2min 23.8 sec, and in the second heat, R. Gray (Wharenui) swam 2min 21.4 sec, which would have broken the record by o.ssec on the conversion tables. A surprising feature of the junior boys’ events was the eclipse of Newton, who holds many Canterbury age group records. He was second in his heat of the 200 metres freestyle in the third fastest time of the heats, and second in his heat of the 100 metres freestyle, recording the third fastest time again. Until these preliminaries he had dominated the freestyle swimming in his grades. In the 200 metres freestyle there are five competitors within one second of each other, and the final should provide an exciting finish. In the boys’ under-10 heats, N Meyers won three of his events and recorded the fastest time in each. He was second in his fourth race, the 50 metres breaststroke, to- his clubmate, M. Prebble (Wharenui). Miss J. Mills had a surprising but deserved win over Miss J. Pinkerton in the 100 metres breaststroke in the girls’ under--14 grade, and then had to witnstand a spirited by a younger opponent (11-y ear-old Miss I Thompson) in the under--13 200 metres breaststroke. Miss Thompson swam particularly well in all her events and qualified for finals in both grades. Immediately after qualifying in the under-13 200 metres breaststroke with the second fastest time, she swam in the under-12 100 metres freestyle and won her heat. Results:
