RACING Spectre Favoured For Main Avondale Event

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. From any viewpoint Spectre, Skint Dip, and Stevedore dominate the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the December Handicap, at Avondale today.

Each is a young horse of considerable promise, well up to winning one of the big prizes during the Christmas holiday racing.

Skint Dip, a Te Rapa three-year-old, is in the Great Northern Derby and Spectre is a light-weight in the Auckland Cup. There is a possibility Stevedore will be taken to Awapuni for the holidays with the Manawatu Cup in view. If Skint Dip is going to have any chance with Piko in the Derby he should win this one, over a furlong shorter course and under a pound less than the Derby weight, and win it well. But Spectre will need to do likewise if he is to be considered a cup chance. Skint Dip, from five attempts, has had four wins and a second, all in less than three months.

Spectre, a four-year-old, has managed only minor placings but he has been tackling much stronger opposition. Last time he finished third behind Choucuana and Heflu in the South Auckland Cup over 11 furlongs. Naturally enough, for his coming back to intermediate company. Spectre has a bigger weight this time—Bst 91b as against 7st 51b. Open Win

The high point of Stevedore s form was two starts back when he won an open 10-furlong race at Dargaville. He had been successful twice in hack middle - distance events at Whangarei and third with Bst 121 b in an intermediate 10 furlongs at Avondale.

Back so quickly to a mile, Stevedore might have been excused for not winning at Pukekohe but his failure to get in the first dozen of the 20 runners at the finish was inexplicable. He looks to have trained on well meanwhile so he is worth another chance this time.

The best prospects otherwise are, Giant Size and Miss Finance. The second leg, the December Handicap, is likely to be between Harleigh March, Flash By and Stimulate with Psychedelic, perhaps, the best outsider. * Harleigh March won at Ha-' were last week in no uncertain manner.

To all appearances Harleigh March came through his Taranaki trip in excellent heart and he has the advantage of a good barrier position.

Flash By has plenty of ability and Stimulate, at times, has looked outstandirig. A three-year-old, Stimulate was one of the big disappointments of the Dargaville meeting, when he failed in an intermediate sprint, but he is too good to dismiss on that one lapse. Fine, warm weather continued yesterday and the track wilt be fast.
