TRANSPORT HITCH AFFECTS RICCARTON ENTRANT

A long-range plan which is likely to terminate with a start for Dewi Sant in the Auckland Cup on New Year’s Day might go astray if A. D. Whiteman cannot secure space to fly the horse south to Riccarton on Thursday. The programme which Whiteman had mapped out for the Stunning five-year-old included a start in the $6OOO Stars Travel Gold Cup at the Hororata Racing Club’s annual meeting at Riccarton on Saturday.

Yesterday Whiteman unsuccessfully tried to book space on a flight from Hamilton on Thursday but he still hopes N.A.C. will have a change of heart before the week-end so the horse can fulfil his engagement at Riccarton.

Besides being a big disappointment for Whiteman it will be a blow to the Hororata Club if space cannot be found for Dewi Sant, for he will, no doubt, heighten northern interest in the meeting.

According to Whiteman, Dewi Sant, the runner-up at his last three starts in open handicaps in the north, has really thrived since his laststart second to Loofah at Hawera last week. If Dewi Sant races at Riccarton he will be ridden by the northern horseman, K. E. Reggett Dewi Sant was one of two North Island stayers left in the field for the Stars Travel Gold Cup when acceptances closed yesterday. The other is Kalott which is to be sent south later this week by her Otaki trainer, K. J. Thomson. Although not successful at the New Zealand Cup meeting last month Kalott ran sound races. She was sixth in the New Zealand Cup and fourth in the Metropolitan Handicap. Kalott is second in the handicaps. She has Bst 91b, 31b less than last month’s Churchill Stakes winner, Red Chips.

Next in the weights are Donald Mac, which won the Jockey Club Handicap and was the runner-up to Red Chips in the Churchill Stakes, and Red Siren, the Metropolitan Handicap winner.

The Stars Travel Gold Cup will be the first leg of the T.A.B. concession double. The second leg is the Gordon’s Gin Handicap, in which Yipp, the winner of the Members’ Handicap on the final day of the cup meeting last month, will lead the field out There will be an on-course concession double on the Hororata High-weight and the H. A. Knight Memorial Hack Handicap. The jackpot, which starts with a pool of $4839 carried forward from the Banks Peninsula meeting last month, will be on the H. A. Knight Memorial, Trial Stakes No. 1, Stars Travel Gold Cup, L. Derrett Hack Handicap, Trial Stakes No. 2, and Gordan’s Gin Handicap. Acceptances for the meeting are:— Acceptances:
