Thefts Of Labour Funds Admitted
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 8. A former honorary vice-chairman and treasurer of the Karori inter-branch council of the Labour Party appeared in the Magistrate’s Court today charged with stealing sums of money totalling $1053 from Labour Party fqnds..
Huon Adrian . Chandler, aged 22, a clerk, pleaded guilty to two. chiurges of theft by fraudulently omitting to account for the amounts received by him. One of the charges involved $3B received from the Kaiwharawhara branch of the Labour Party, and the othet involved sums’totalling $lOl5. The offences - occurred between April 4. and September 18. , ■ , ' Chandler alto admitted forging a Treasury chequefor $996:99 which, the court was told, he used in an attempt to replace the stolen ‘money
when the deficiency in the party funds was discovered. Consequently, he also faced, a charge of uttering in connection with the same cheque. This was also admitted by Chandler. In addition, Chandler pleaded guilty to 12 charges of forging doctor’s prescription forms which certified that he was ill and unfit fpr work, and 12 charges of causing John William Johnston to act on these prescriptions.
The Magistrate remanded Chandler to December 15 for a probation report and sentepee. Bail was allowed.
