OVERSEAS TRADING

SYDNEY Mining and oil shares traded strongly towards the end of trading on the Sydney Stock Exchange yesterday. The market closed generally higher, although some of the more active miners finished below their best. Rises easily outnumbered falls at the close. Poseidon, which took an early lead and traded to a peak of 7900 came back to sell at 7300 before firming to close at 7500 — a gain of 750 on the day. Beach put on 40, on news that the BP-Todd-Shell well in New Zealand was ready for production testing. Industrials were mixed, with rises and falls fairly even at the close. Sales. —Assoc.
