When the twelfth-round match was adjourned overnight, Mecking had a bishop and' five pawns against the veteran Czechoslovak master’s knight and five pawns. When play resumed both men tried hard but could not break through, and the game was declared a draw in five moves.

This left B. Larsen (Denmark), and the former world champion, T. Petrosian (Russia) in the lead with tight points each. Hort and the world champion, B. Spassky (Russia), both have 7.5 points. Mecking is third, with seven points. V. Korchnoi (Russia), who began the tournament as favourite, and M. Najdorf (Argentina), are fourth on 6.5 points each.

Weight Racer U— B. Pavlov (Russia) set a world weightlifting record for the light heavy-weight jerk with a lift of 191 kilograms (4211 b at the Black Sea resort of Tuapse. This added half a kilogram (1.11 b to the previous record set by another Russian, B. Selitsky.
