Links Cut

Telephone links between Christchurch and Lincoln, Leeston, Springston, Irwell, and Southbridge were cut about 1 p.m. yesterday when a drainage contractor’s implement broke three pipes, one carrying 250 lines to the districts, outside the Black Horse Hotel, Lincoln Road. Radio cars were sent to each of the affected exchanges to relay any 111 emergency calls, but none was made before the circuits were repaired at 7.45 p.m. The regional engineer of the Post Office (Mr H. W. Wilkinson) said that the three pipes were the top layer of a group under the footpath. Each was about 3}in in diameter, but only one carried the 2}in bundle of wires. Some lines were connected about 5 p.m., he said. Some contact was available to the affected areas during the repair through other exchanges.
