Gastric Cases Increase

The number of cases of gastro-enteritis rose markedly in Christchurch in the four weeks ending November 23, according to the report of the research committee of the Canterbury faculty of the College of General Practitioners.

Fifty-five cases were re, ported, compared with 39 for the previous four-weekly period. The latest figure includes 'lB cases involving diarrhoea, 18 with vomiting, and 29 with both symptomsAlthough returns were sent in by 39 doctors, compared with 32 last month, the number of cases reported to the committee was 738, compared with 744 for the previous similar period. The number of viral infections to the respiratory system dropped from 218 to 195, but the number of staphylococcal infections in adults rose from 28 to 37, the report says.

The number of measles cases fell from 113 to 94, but rubella rose from nine to 21. Tonsillitis cases were 20 fewer at 127, and mumps cases were up from 13 to 18. Other reported diseases were: Middle ear infections, 62 (60 last report); pleurodynia, 7 (13); acute labyrinthitis, 15 (12); glandular fever, 12 (12); herpes zoster, 10 (5); tracheitis, 17 (18); and chickenpox, 14 (15).
