Heathcote Credit

The Heathcote County had a current credit balance of more than $llO,OOO, the County Clerk (Mr K. D. Stills) told the council last evening. . This was $83,000 mpre than the balance at the same time last year, he said. Since last April the county had incurred an overdraft not exceeding $60,000 whereas last year it had had to borrow up to $109,000. Mr Stills attributed the healthy state of the county’s finances to the receipt of $117,000 in rates for the 196970 year. This amount represented more than 40 per cent of the total rate levy, including that payable to other authorities. He said that the amount so far collected was 8.7 per cent more than last year. “It was noticeable again this year that many more people paid only the county share of their rates to obtain the discount for early payment,” he said. “It is obvious that ratepayers are becoming more aware that they need only pay the county general and water rates to obtain the full discount,” said Mr Stills.
