Poranui To Trade In Pacific Islands

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 23

The former Northern Steam Ship Company coaster Poranui has been bought by Mr A. R. Rusden, of Auckland, who plans to use the vessel for freelance trading in the Pacific Islands.

The 1120-ton coaster is at present undergoing an annual survey at Auckland but will load a cargo at Tauranga for Noumea at the end of the month. Mr Rusden previously owned the Matipo, another former coaster, which went aground and remained fast on a coral reef off New Caledonia for a number of months. He said the Poranui would not engage in regular running. At the moment there was a demand for ships to make unscheduled voyages and the Poranui would freelance around the Pacific and probably run from the Australian coast to Port Moresby for a while. The Poranui would be taken off the New Zealand

register and registered at Vila, in the New Hebrides. One of her first jobs on arrival in the islands would be to transport a land-based oil rig from Port Moresby to Adelaide.
