Forest Fire Danger

"There is a very serious fire danger in alt Canterbury forests, especially at the Eyrewell, Omihl, and Balmoral forests,” said the principal ranger of the Canterbury conservancy of the Forest Service (Mr T. E. C. Bridge) yesterday afternoon. Strong north-west winds had blown for the last four days and humidity was very low, Mr Bridge said. Yesterday it was in the low twenties. Motorists were warned against throwing cigarette butts from can and the lighting of fires was prohibited; persons passing through or near State forest areas were asked to take every care to prevent fire breaking out, said Mr Bridge.
