Children Said To Have Damaged Park
The activities of children in Rugby Park concerned members at a meeting of the Canterbury Athletic Centre last evening.
Mr K. Simpson said that at a recent training session in the park he had seen a group of Wolf Cubs cause considerable damage to the hammer cage, the clock and the jumping pit, all within the space of 10 minutes. There appeared to be no-one supervising the boys. Mr T. Crossen said that children were coming into the park from the Malvern Street gate, and were in a position to do considerable damage to the equipment there. He was also concerned about proper supervision when children were entitled to be in the park as the previous day there had been a serious accident while an intermediate school was holding its sports there.
Film Evening.— The centre accepted a recommendation from its publicity committee that if the former New Zealand athlete, M. G. Halberg, was not available, a film evening arranged for October 31 should be cancelled. The evening is planned as part of a publicity venture to attract school pupils into the sport.
Track Brochure.— Mr W. Kennedy reported that a brochure setting out plans - for the pro-
posed all-weather track on the Merry Estate at Kerr’s Reach would be before the Christchurch City Council reserves committee in about a week.
Record.—A new Canterbury senior hammer record of 178 ft Bin, set by W. Nichol on October 18, was ratified.
Appointed.—The following officials for the coming season were appointed: New Zealand championships. Mr T. Crossen and Mrs L. Horsnell (manager), Mrs K. Jameson (coach). New Zealand junior championships, Mr B. Kerr (manager). Mr P. Davies (coach). Triangular contest (Canterbury v. Otago, v. Southland), Mr G. Hack and Mrs J. de Beere (managers).
