Vigil In Square
A vigil will be held in Cathedral Square today from noon to 7.30 p.m. by members of the Christchurch branch of the Citizens’ Association for Racial Equality. Today is United Nations Day, and the vigil will be a pledge of the association’s support for the goals of the United Nations, the vicechairman of the branch (Mr R. H. T. Thompson) said in a statement last evening. It will also be an expression of the association’s concern at the comment of the Secretary-General of the United Nations (U Thant) that the problems which beset the world and stand in the way of peace, prosperity, justice and human dignity have been met with selfishness, complacency and indifference, the statement said. The association was particularly conscious that in spite of U Thant’s call for an end to sporting exchanges with South Africa, New Zealand was continuing its sports tours under conditions acceptable to apartheid, and in spite of commitments to United Nations resolutions on Rhodesia and South-West Africa was planning to send the All Blacks to those territories.
Mr Thompson said only four to six persons would be involved in the vigil at a time. Permission had been applied for, but no answer had yet been received.
