Cottages Decision “A Bitter Blow”
The Government’s refusal to co-operate with the Waimairi County Council in providing pensioner cottages after earlier departmental assurances of assistance—even though such aid was less than was necessary —had been a bitter blow to the council, said Mr D. B. Rich last evening.
Reporting to the council’s annual meeting, Mr Rich, the chairman, said that the Government decision must have immeasurably deepened the despair of many needy persons.
No Government assistance had been made available for new pensioners’ accommodation projects during the last two financial years. Mr Rich said.
It was hoped that even at this late stage reconsideration would be given to helping local government to meet the
need, and representations had been made to local members of Parliament.
The council had 66 applicants from within the county and 127 from other areas awaiting accommodation. Many did not bother to apply because of the time which must elapse before accommodation could be made available.
This was the only time during the last six years that the council had not had a project under construction or in prospect, Mr Rich said.
