Nobel Prize To Beckett

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) STOCKHOLM, Oct. 23. The 1969 Nobel Prize for literature was today awarded to the Irish-born playwright, Samuel Beckett, who is 63. Mr Beckett, who lives in Paris, was honoured by the Swedish Academy “for his writing, which—in new forms for the novel and drama—in the destitution of modern man, acquires its elevation."

He will receive 375,000 crowns ($64,000) in prize money.

Regarded as one of the greatest living playwrights and a major influence on midcentury European drama Mr Beckett has been among the leading candidates for the award for several years. Mr Beckett published his first novel, “Murphy,” in 1939, and his first, and bestknown play, the avant-garde “Waiting for Godot,” in 1954.
