Bird Hazard At Airport Reduced
The bird hazard at Christchurch Airport had been considerably reduced and it now’ had a low rating in this respect, the airport manager (Mr A. I. R. Jamieson) said yesterday.
In the last 18 months the airport authority had dispensed with all rubbish tips in the vicinity of the airport. Lucerne and other crops, which birds did not like landing in, had been encouraged and bird numbers had been reduced noticeably. The Pakistani zoology student at the University of Canterbury, Mr A Moeed, has completed his studies of bird incidence at Christchurch Airport as part of his work towards a Ph.D.-
Mr Jamieson said that Mr Moeed provided the airport authority with an interim report on the problem about a year ago. A full report of his findings and recommendations would be referred to the Internal Affairs Department, the Civil Aviation Division and user airlines. The Wildlife Division of the Internal Affairs Department has had a bird hazard committee looking at problems at several smaller airports. It is expected that soon
grassed areas on the airfield at Christchurch will be sr-rayed to reduce grubs, worms and larvae on which birds feed. Ploughing of land close to the airport may be discouraged.
