HUNDREDS OF DOGS
For anyone who may be a "doggie fan” there will be more than plenty to catch the eye (or even trouser cuffs) at the North Canterbury Kennel Club’s show which will be held at the showgrounds in conjunction with the jumping show on Labour Day.
More than 400 dogs are entered, from throughout New Zealand—a record entry for a one-day South Island show. In fact entries in the Canterbury Kennel Club’s two-day show has not yet ex-1 ceeded the 400 mark The dogs will be entered, basically, in six groups, each, well supported: sheep and. cattle dogs. non-sporting: dogs, gun dogs, hounds, terriers. and toys. Sheep and cattle dogs com-i prise a third of the entry., and of these, corgis are the best supported single breed ; Cardigan corgis—the Inng-; tailed species—seems to he
'regaining popularity, says the secretary of the club (Mr iN A. Brown). Also in this' (class, there is a big increase iin the entry of collies. German shepherds and shepherd sheep dogs are the other main breeds in the sheep and I cattle class. In the class of non-sporting dogs, the 38 poodles entered is the largest entry of poodles at a one-day allbreeds show in New Zealand. Mr Brown ventures to say. The hounds —Beagles. ' Dachshunds, Bassetts, and Afghans—as usual are nqt inumerous Main breeds tn the small ; gun-dog class are Cocker Spaniels and Labradors The terrier entrv is aver-
age, with the “low-to-ground" breeds predominant.
I The toy dogs are just toy ’dogs—all of them just little handfuls Pekinese. Pomeranians. and Chihuahuas—just bed pets. Mr G. Minchington. of Victoria. Australia. will judge all except the nonsporting .and gun-dogs. The North Canterbury show will be the last on his roster of duties in New Zealand—he has already judged the Wellington Cocker Club’s show, a two-day shnw at Hawke's Bay. and will judge the South Island Poodle Club's show in Christchurch on Sunday. Mr D Fifield. of Christchurch. will judge the nonsporting and gun dog classes
