DIVORCE IN BRITAIN

j Lords Agrees ; To New Bill W.Z.PA.-Reuler— Copyright) LONDON, Oct 14. A bill which makes the . breakdown of marriage the . sole ground for divorce in • Britain cleared a major hurdle yesterday, when it received the approval of the House of Lords. The measure, dubbed by its critics as “Casanova’s Charter” now goes back to the House of Commons for a final consideration. By making the irretrievable breakdown of marriage the sole ground for divorce, the bill ends the existing practice of having to prove a marital misdemeanour such as adultery, cruelty or desertion. The most controversial clauses of the new bill would allow couples to divorce after two years separation if both partners agree, and after five years separation if one partner objects.
