Hagley Park
Sir, —“Cam” should be thanked for his view of the suggestion for a sports stadium in North Hagley Park, after the ill-advised closing of the eastern end of Harper Avenue. “C.P.” hopes that the
people of Christchurch, this city of resignation, will not accept further "encroachments” in the area, but this will probably be a forlorn hope. Further, the prevention of people using the very pleasant route to the city via Helmores Lane and the cycle track through the park and past Victoria Lake must be very mortifying to the many cyclists who have used this way.—Yours, etc., R.H.LAKE. October 14, 1969.
Sir,—Two issues stand out in the City Council’s latest bright idea. First, it seems that they cannot get rid of our precious open space in Hagley Park fast enough. Second, the last-comer will be first served. What has happened to the development at Kerr’s Reach which is badly needed as a centre for athletics and hockey? The council said it had no ready money to finance this and was unable to launch a loan. How, then, does it propose to finance the sports stadium? It may be intended as a monument to vandalism, in which case it has my whole-hearted support What could be more effective?—Yours, etc., M, October 14, 1969.
