Orange Skins

Sir, —It there any truth in the statement that the skins of Australian navel oranges are impregnated with a substance to give them a more brilliant colour and that this colouring agent is harmful to humans? As , grated orange skin is frequently used in cakes and , puddings one would like to know if such use constitutes a health hazard.—Yours, etc., G.S. October 8, 1969.

[Mr J. B. Snoad, supervising inspector of the Department of Health in Christchurch, replies: ‘The colouring substances, ’citrus red No. 2’ is permitted to be added to the skins of whole mature oranges in a proportion not exceeding two parts to a million, provided that when this is done each orange skin is stamped with the statement, ‘Colour added,’ or ‘Artificially coloured.’ This is allowed by the Food and Drugs Regulations, 1946, regulation 147 (16 and 17). If used as specified there would be no health hazard.”]
