Gun Laws Eased
(NZP.4..Reut«r—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Oct 10. The Senate yesterday eased the 1968 Gun Control Act in spite of Utter opposition from Senator Edward Kennedy, whose brothers, John and Robert, were killed by assassins’ bullets. The Senate decided by 65 vote* to 16 in favour of a proposal by Senator Wallace Bennett (Republican, Utah) to exclude rifle and shotgun shells from ammunition registration requirements. The Gun Control Act, passed last year, requires a gun dealer to record various details about a buyer of ammunition. Senator Kennedy did not mention the assassinations of President John Kennedy in 1963, and Senator Robert Kennedy last year, but complained that the ammunition amendment had not had a public Senate hearing.
Senator Bennett’s measure was tagged on to unrelated tax legislation, and sent to the House of Representatives, where it will face a fight “What kind of procedure
are we eomln* to?" Senatoi Kennedy shouted at Senate Bennett, a senior Senate Rs publican, during the debate.
