SHARP RISE IN POWER DEMAND
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct 10. Today’s weather was reflected in the country’s electricity consumption. A spokesman for the Electricity Department said that the peak power demand to midday today had risen by 15 per cent in the North Island and 25 per rent in the South Island. Snow fell in Lower Hutt today for the first time in 40 yean. An average temperature of 40 degrees in Wellington was accompanied by winds gusting to 60 m.p.h.
Auckland, too, had cold, showery weather, with strong winds. Snow at Tnturau, five miles east of Mataura, closed the 36-pupii school, but aU roads in Southland remained open. Stock losses and crop damage In the south are reported to be light, although a frost is expected tonight The lowest noon temperature in the main centres was 37 degrees in Christchurch. The temperature was 39 in Wellington, 44 in Dunedin and 58 in Auckland.
