Local Bodies Discuss Car Litter Bags
(From Our Own Reporter) BLENHEIM, October 10. While sympathetic towards a proposal by the Eyre County Council that it should be made mandatory for vehicles to carry litter bags, the South Island Local Bodies’ Association today referred the suggestion to its executive for action.
Mr R. C. Kimber, of Eyre, sought to have the provision of litter bags compulsory to qualify for a warrant of fitness.
This was quite ridiculous, said the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr J. B. Collett), although the principle was good. A warrant was issued for the mechanical fitness of a vehicle. It might just as well be said it should be compulsory to carry a rag for cleaning a windscreen.
In national parks in Canada and the United States motorists were signed in and out by park rangers and given a littering when they were checked th? Mayor of Blenheim . Harl-
ing) said. When he was checked out he was asked for his litter bag, and “got a fine telling off” when he handed it back unopened. There were some litter bags issued in New Zealand by an oil company, Mr Harting said. He was sure that some big organisation would be prepared to issue litter bags for advertising. Mrs' B. R. Eyre (Nelson) said she had been impressed by the use made of litter bags on buses. Mr W. P. Glue (Christ church) suggested that it should also be made compulsory for a litter box to be installed everywhere there was a bus seat.
