STUDENTS’ CONCERT

Display Of Cultures Giving New Zealanders an insight into the cultures of Asia and the Pacific and thereby cementing good relationships in the area, is the aim of a concert which will be given at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre, Ham, on Friday and Saturday by the Canterbury Malaysia-Singapore Students’ Association. . With a cast of more than 60, the concert will present national dances, songs and folk music from seven countries. It was originally planned to hold the concert on just one night, Saturday, but the demand has made it necessary to add another performance. Items from China, Malaya, India, Bali, Vietnam and Samoa, as well as New Zealand will be given at the concert, which will be the third the association has held since it was formed in 1960. A parade of national costumes also features in the programme, and most of the costumes have been made by the students with materials bought in New Zealand. A group from Dunedin as guest artists will perform the Chinese red ribbon dance. A display of Chinese self defence arts will also be given. The students, some from high schools in Christchurch as well as those from university, have been rehearsing for a month and a half.
